CHANG: Being married to Matthew, how much have you evolved away from how you used to think about being with white men? We cant pull away from the value of that while reckoning with this other thing. GOODMAN: Thank you so much. CHANG: When it came to being both Black and gay, there was something that you wrote that really stuck with me. I think they can feel that their grip is loosening and so theyre really doubling down. Shady. And really, Matthew and I would always joke about people always saying, I want my other half. In his time with Big Mouth, he also helped create and launch the shows mentorship program for aspiring Black writers in animation, known as theBrutus Pink x The Black Folx Initiative. And writing about that was all the things you think it is, sad and tragic and devastating and painful and healing and transformative. And I do think that theres still value in some of the content that does exist. So Im just honored to be on the ride. He never thought that at the time he was writing it, his own work would eventually turn into something this big. GOODMAN: Yes, that's the work. That's my hope. And the whole point was, how do we support and amplify up-and-coming Black writers and give them this eight week, one-on-one intensive where they get to audit the room? But I still think we get to say, Hey, this thing, you might want to look at it through a different lens. And I think its the responsibility of the comedian to say, OK, Im going to let that in and listen to it. When I was about 21, I told my therapist that "no matter how attractive I might be, I'd never be as attractive as a white man." However, the list doesnt stop there. Just because you got knocked down doesn't mean you can be counted out. I always say for my Black readers and Black queer readers, I hope that they feel less alone. And we really try to push that, which is why it's exciting that [the trans character] Natalie comes back on Human Resources. I started the mentorship program in 2020 with the help of my bosses, Mark [Levin], Jen [Flackett], Andrew [Goldberg] and Nick [Kroll]. Understanding the complexity of both, he uses his voice in unique ways to educate others on topics only someone like him could truthfully share.
